Restaurant ambiance was ok, nice staff, not many people for the sunset view on a Saturday night. My only complaint was not having a military discount, I thought it was located in Coos Bay which has a large Chamber of Commerce sign saying they support our military, however I found out later that the HillTop is actually in North Bend. Regardless this restaurant does NOT offer any GI discounts. I will probably pass it by in the future.

This seemed like an awful lot of money considering the portions and ambiance ... and, you know, the food quality. Nice waitress in the lounge. But sitting in the lounge and looking through the propped open door to the kitchen I could see at least two cats wandering around in there, which seemed a bit weird for a restaurant in a developed nation. Although we do seem to be sliding pretty quickly into third-world status out here in the hinterland. Oh, and the cloth napkins stank. Glad we tried HH once, but it won't be a regular hangout. Disappointing since there really aren't any good Bay Area choices for a dinner house type place to entertain guests from out of town, etc.

A great place to meet friends on a Friday or Saturday night. They have great cocktails and good food. The dinning room has a birds-eye view of the bay, one of the few restaurants in the Coos Bay area with a water view. The dinning room has a white table cloth atmosphere and plenty of separation between the window tables, to feel comfortable and private. My husband and I usually end up eating in the lounge, where we run into many familiar faces. The one menu item that I will ALWAYS order is the stuffed mushrooms, filled with crab, cheese and herbs, fantastic! (Let them cool off for a few minutes before trying, better flavor and texture.) Being a huge Prime Rib fan, I've never been disappointed at the Hilltop. My sister had me to take her there during her last three visits with me, because they prepare razor clams "the right way", her words. Also, for anyone who likes Oscar style, they usually have one or two items prepared that way. I once asked if they would prepare my Filet Mignon, Oscar style, it was no problem. And I enjoyed every bite.

Great view. The place is clean and the staff is friendly. We had a table overlooking the water & once the food came out I didn't even notice the decor. There were four of us. We had the 1) Baked Stuffed Halibut (stuffed with crab and bay shrimp) in a Hollandaise and Mornay Sauce. 2) Lightly breaded Halibut. 3) Ribeye 4) Surf & Turf (topped with caramelized onions & Roquefort cheese sauce). Everyone loved their food- with raves about the Stuffed Halibut and Roquefort cheese sauce! Most had a baked with the entree but I had the Garlic Pasta which was delicious and really a meal all its own. The Italian Sausage Vegetable soup was really good. Sadly for my husband, the Manhattan clam chowder was not even close-not red and had a strange strong flavor that was not good. Our waitress greeted us and we didn't see her until check time. Alicia was very attentive with the water and really ended up taking care of us. They were busy and Alicia hustled from table to table but was always professional and got us everything we needed. We give Alicia 5 stars for top service. We will definitely come back!

Five of us had dinner here on a Saturday night. They were busy, but I made a reservation two hours ahead and a table by the window was ready when we arrived. I had prime rib and my wife had a crab salad. Everyone enjoyed their meal. The service was excellent - as were the desserts! We had a nice view of the water through the trees. We'll go back next time we visit North Bend.

We were not able to rate the food. We took family to the Hilltop Restaurant on Saturday night to celebrate our Uncle's Birthday. We arrived at 5:55pm for our reservation and we were promptly seated in the back by the window. We enjoyed the view and conversation with family. We were seated for 25 minutes before our waitress came to take our drink and food order. She returned in 15 minutes with our drinks. It was another 20 minutes ( one hour of waiting) with our soup and salad. Another 25 minuets passed and she brought two steak knifes and said our food was coming soon. Not once did our waitress ever ask if we wanted another drink or even water. The hostess refilled our water. After another 25 minutes which was one hour and fifty minutes we decided to leave. We asked the hostess for the bill so far and when she came back she said it was on the counter. I paid what we owed and left.

Service was less than expected. Just our server. My entree came out slightly cold. The food technically shouldn't be considered fine dining if all ingredients aren't fresh. The owner should think about updating his interior considering how much he charges a plate. Expect $25 and up an entree. My mates steak was over cooked. Appetizer could have been executed more efficient. Also, a packaged brown gravy on garlic mash is never okay! My medallions were great, crab slightly over cooked. Vegetables need to be crisp. The sauce with the vegetable didn't compliment the meal. Food snobs... Yes, but credentials to back it up. I imagine this is a hit or miss type of place. I would keep driving to Florence and stop by Homegrown! Our favorite spot on the coast so far!

Love love this place! Service is great. Crab and artichoke dip was amazing. The menu was huge with great options. Went with the hunters steak. Came out perfect. Place was pretty busy so seems that others like it too!

The Hilltop House has been a standby in North Bend since I was little. I have very happy memories of mother's day brunches for my Grandmother featuring a chef with a very impressive hat slicing a roast, gorgeous, sumptuous decor, glittering lights and a beautiful view of the bay. That was roughly twenty-five years ago. The decor is the same now. No longer quite so stylish, and after 25 years, it is worn. There is less glitter. The view remains beautiful. Things I did not appreciate when I was a child include a classy wait staff and good food. The food at Hilltop is routinely good. Not great, not amazing, but always solidly good. The wait staff is attentive without being obnoxious. The cocktails, like the food, are not especially creative, but they are also good. The desserts are lovely. The bathroom. . .is like the clean and well cared for bathroom at small family owned restaurant. It's not a powder room, girls. It is a little jarring and out of the "classy old place" vibe you get out on the floor. The bottom line with Hilltop House is that it's one of the few places in North Bend these days where you don't feel overdone if you dress up and go out. You can put on your heels, order a cocktail and enjoy the view while a server takes good care of you. And it's always a good experience. PS - NOT veg-friendly. I can eat here because I'm technically pescatarian. But this menu is not created with an eye for eating restrictions. No veggie protein anywhere, other than cheese. Definitely no vegan options.

Argh!! This was the first time yelp gave me bad directions. Anyways, I finally found the restaurant, which is actually directly off highway 101, very easy to find. The place is nicely appealing on the outside...in the inside...not so much. Very very dated, I'm talking musty scent and all. Because of the rustic (not in a good way) decor, which I must state, is totally cool in a different type of eating establishment...such as a old retro diner, BBQ pit or some such, but because of Hilltop House being a FINE dining restaurant...this old charm is pretty plain...gross. I felt I stepped into a snooty country club restaurant circa 1970. Okay, so two big stars I felt succumbed to the outdated vibe, also the loud music coming back from the kitchen. Really?? That is a big fat NONO. Pluses: Beautiful views of the bay!!! Seriously lovely! The food was delicious! The prices may be high to some, but to my husband and I, we don't mind paying the big bucks for some serious down right fresh and well put together meals. Razor clams...amazing. Fettuccini Alfredo with perfectly grilled chicken, seasoned just right. Overall, in OK experience....wish I could say more....

The food was just ok. For being a high priced steak house you really don't get the quality that you should. I wouldn't waste your time or your money.

The view was great but that's about all this place has going for it. With a pricey place like this I would expect the food and service to be more than just ok. The best part of our meal was the soup.

The service staff are enthusiastic but slow, slow, slow. Don't go here if in a hurry. The interior is mid 60's, bathroom toilet out of service. View is nice and food is adequate but doesn't make up for the slowwww service.

The interior, especially the restrooms, are pretty dated but the food, service and views are excellent. My husband says they have the best razor clams he's ever had. On busy nights, be prepared to wait. Only complaint (from 12/31/12): $7 for a soda! Even if it does come with unlimited refills, that's robbery!

This place is AMAZING. The food and service is Excellent. Those who complain that service is slow need to learn to relax. They serve FRESH & QUALITY DISHES. They don't just slop stuff on your plate. Enjoy a fine dining experience with casual atmosphere and the view of the bay is Beautiful.

One of my favorite restaurants in the area. We always eat in the lounge as we love the casual feel but they just redid the main restaurant and it has some of the best views around. I have a hard time deciding between the Cioppino or the Ribeye steak sandwich. Note: steak sandwich is only on the lounge menu and the cioppino isn't actually on the menu, you just have to ask the server if its available that night.

Boston clam chowder was tasteless so I skipped having a full meal - but the portions looked huge and the other guests seemed happy.

Joe Zamora, family and staff at the Hilltop will respond to any problem that a customer has (real or make believe based on that person's Chrystal Knowledge) critical comments always welcome because you can't fix what you don't know is broken!! This is a 'Fine Dinning' House and service can be slow, if you want Fast Service, go to a 'Fast Food' place! If you don't make your Wishes known, its your problem if you make a 'reasonable request' and its not responded to its Joe's problem. Speak up before you post a review!

Went for early bird dinner and wished we had saved the money. I think the food was left over from the weekend before. Salad had too many pickled items that were very salty. Dressing was honey mustard, but not sweet but very tangy and unappealing. We had the salmon. It was hard and dry, and it seemed like it had been rewarmed from an earlier time. Mashed potatoes was served with a slimy beef gravy that was so very salty and unappealing. Then the dessert which was a mixture of cool whip and chocolate. YUK ! Save you money.

I had such high hopes for this restaurant experience. The reviews touted it as a fine dining establishment and the actual building looked inviting from the outside. My biggest issue was the smell that greeted me upon entering - musty/urine. I would have turned around and walked out the door had I not been with a workmate. The ambiance and food quality was definitely not worth the $$$

Owner is the Chef, food is exceptional. It's old school, interior is outdated but you wont care once your food arrives.

We have eaten here off and on for years. My son from out of town and two others and I had dinner here a couple of nights ago. Our choices were the salmon, halibut and combination seafood plate. All were good however the service was extremely slow and this was on a Monday night. Most of the time the food is good but the service varies from visit to visit. It seems a little overrated to me but we don't have too many choices in this area

Likely the best food in the bay area. Get reservations for the sunset view. We had the baked salmon, grilled halibut, seafood soup, clam chowder, and crab coctail ALL were excellent. Also had grilled snapper which was ok, maybe 3 of 5. We went twice during our two day stay and wished they were open for lunch.

i'm pretty sure this place is fine dining for people who have no idea what fine dining really is. i guess that way they can overcharge for some very mediocre food. the staff were a little flustered and/or angry. nice view though.
